Significant air pollution detected during Suncor malfunction, elevated levels expected to last throughout today
Sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide levels exceed Suncor’s permit limits.
REMOTE (April 12, 2023): The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment found higher-than-normal levels of sulfur dioxide in the area surrounding the Suncor refinery in Commerce City this morning. The higher-than-normal levels did not exceed federal National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). The standard is measured in one-hour increments, and it is 75 parts per billion per hour. Cultivando’s air monitors recorded two short-term spikes, one at 155 ppb and another at 186 ppb.
