Peterson Space Force Base is located in Colorado Springs, El Paso County and shares runways with the Colorado Springs Municipal Airport. The installation is used for a combination of administrative, industrial, residential, community, recreational and aircraft operations, as well as support of special space missions. The industrial operations at the installation generally are associated with aircraft and vehicle maintenance, such as engine repair, aircraft systems maintenance, and painting.
Environmental response activities at the Peterson Space Force base were completed to address hazardous wastes generated, treated and stored at the site, which included characterization of the contamination through soil and groundwater sampling along with remediation by soil removal action where required.
Current environmental response activities at Peterson Space Force Base are intended to address per– and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) associated with the industrial, airport and fire training activities. The installation is conducting 14 pilot studies to determine effectiveness of different PFAS detection and treatment technologies to determine future remedial actions.
